Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Committee on International Affairs Alexei Chepa, in an interview with Izvestia, called the US plans to send warships to the Arctic to be expected.
Earlier in January, the head of the US Navy, Richard Spencer, said that the United States plans to send a group of warships to the Arctic this summer. It was noted that this is done to test the operation of ships in high latitudes.
Spencer added that the discussion of the presence of US ships over the past two years has changed a lot due to the possible discovery of three transarctic routes.
“This is, of course, a region with a large economic resource. Naturally, the interests of many of those present in this region will subsequently intersect here. Therefore, the Americans are preparing for this. This is a predictable and expected move on their part, ”said Chepa.
According to him, the Arctic is largely in the zone of Russia’s interests, and Moscow is ready to defend them.
Earlier, in December, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said that the US authorities plan to expand the presence of their military forces in the Arctic and achieve superiority in the space field. He stressed that the Russian side is closely monitoring the situation.
