The State Duma supported the request of Syria to meetings of the UN Security Council on the situation with the Golan Heights. A member of the Committee on International Affairs, a deputy from the LDPR faction, Anton Morozov, in an interview with Duma TV, said that international law is firm and Russia will always stand on his guard.
“It’s quite natural that Syria appealed to the Security Council to protect its territorial integrity, since Israel seized these territories long ago de facto and is now trying, with US support, to legalize the seizure of territories, which is unacceptable in accordance with international law,” the parliamentarian said.
The deputy also stressed: “Russia, of course, will defend international law, and here even the situation with Syria is not so important, how fundamental is the fact of a flagrant violation of international law, and such situations can recur throughout the world if not put a reliable barrier in time” .
“This can provoke a series of illegal annexations of territories and aggression of states against each other,” he added.
In conclusion, Morozov stressed that Russia will oppose the recognition of Israeli sovereignty over the Golan Heights: “I don’t think that this will somehow negatively affect our attitude to us, because the UN Security Council and the United Nations as a whole are fundamentally tool in resolving all confrontations and conflicts around the world. ”
Earlier, TASS reported that Syria had requested meetings of the UN Security Council on the Golan Heights.
Recall, March 25, US President Donald Trump signed a declaration recognizing Israeli sovereignty over the Golan Heights. The document was signed during a meeting of the American leader with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Washington.
During his speech, Trump said that he had made a “historic step”, the purpose of which is to support the security of Israel. However, a number of Washington allies condemned the statement of the head of the White House.
