Anton Morozov: “The one who controls the Arctic, will profit from transport operations and the Americans want to stake in this direction.”

Anton Morozov, a member of the State Duma Committee on International Affairs, commented in an interview on RT TV channel on Tuesday the declared readiness of the Commander of the European Command of the US Armed Forces Curtis Scaparotti to contain Russia in the Arctic.

According to the deputy, in this statement is hidden “purely economic background”, since the Northern Sea Route is the shortest and most cost-effective way to transport goods from Asia to Europe.

“Anyone who controls the Arctic will be able to profit from these transport operations. Apparently, the Americans want to become staunch in this direction. However, they were a little late. Russia has long been developing the Arctic, several generations of our polar explorers have invested their own forces in it. So it is unlikely that Americans can catch up with us, ”he said.

Morozov noted that powerful icebreakers, which only Russia has, are required to cross the Northern Sea Route. In addition, all legal documents have been drawn up for our country.

At the same time, Morozov urged not to treat the Pentagon’s statements too lightly, admitting the possibility of military threats from filing with the United States, which could have a detrimental effect on shipping along the Northern Sea Route.

Earlier on Tuesday, Curtis Scaparotti at a Senate hearing stated that the United States was ready to hold back Russia in the Arctic. According to him, now the Northern Sea Route is more often open and there is a “resource and commercial interest” in it.
