Anton Morozov: “The protest of Japan in connection with the exercises in the Kuril Islands is completely unjustified”

The State Duma commented on Japan’s protest in connection with the Russian military exercises in the Kuril Islands. It is not justified and once again proves that such exercises should be carried out, they said in the committee on international affairs.

The Japanese Foreign Ministry informed that the purpose of the exercise declared by Russia does not correspond to the position of Japan regarding these islands. Russian maneuvers in this territory are unacceptable, the protest says.

“A completely unreasonable protest,” said Anton Morozov, a member of the State Duma’s international affairs committee, quoted by RIA Novosti. He stressed that “it is precisely the provocative actions of Japan, the constant statements about their claims to Russian territory” that make it necessary to strengthen the defense capability in the Kuril Islands.

The parliamentarian called it “quite natural” that the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation “are preparing for possible aggressions and interventions by foreign states in the area.”

He advised the Japanese side to “slow down and stop such belligerent rhetoric” for the sake of peace and tranquility in this region.

Deputy Chairman of the Federation Council Committee on Defense and Security, Mikhail Kozlov, also reminded that Russia has the right to conduct any military exercises on its territory. He stressed that these doctrines do not bear any threat to Japan, and, moreover, Russia, as provided for by international agreements, notified them in advance.

The exercise began the day before on the islands of Kunashir and Iturup. It is reported that 500 military and 70 pieces of equipment are involved in them, which are working against the landing of a conditional enemy.
