Dmitry Novikov: Berlin is ready to defend its interests in the Nord Stream 2 issue

Germany’s response to US sanctions against Nord Stream 2 indicates Berlin’s readiness to defend its interests, said Dmitry Novikov, first deputy chairman of the State Duma’s international affairs committee.

“In the most difficult periods, when the clouds seemed to be gathering over Nord Stream 2, I always predicted that it would be completed and the Germans would bring the project to completion … there were those who understand that such a gas pipeline meets the interests of German business, citizens and the economic development of Germany in general, “Novikov told RT.

According to the deputy, economic issues related to Nord Stream 2 are reflected in the political segment of Germany. At the same time, some politicians prefer not to advertise their attitude to the project, while others, for example, the representative of the German Foreign Ministry Christopher Burger, are able to publicly support him.

The parliamentarian also stressed that such a reaction from Berlin to US sanctions indicates Germany’s readiness to defend its interests.

As previously reported by the Axios portal, the German government has called on members of the US Congress not to impose sanctions against Nord Stream 2. According to documents leaked to the media, restrictive measures will weaken confidence in the United States and damage transatlantic unity.
