First Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Committee on International Affairs, Dmitry Novikov, commented on RT to the statement by US President Donald Trump, who said that he would like to conclude a new agreement to replace the Treaty on the Elimination of Intermediate-Range and Shorter-Range Missiles (INF).
“Whether something follows Trump’s words depends on many things. First of all, what happened with the INF. Is not an accident. In the US, it is about breaking the old system of international security. States want to get additional preferences, but this does not mean that they are not ready for some time to establish new rules of the game if they will be in favor of the Americans, ”said the deputy.
Novikov also noted that building multilateral agreements on the basis of the INF Treaty is a very long process.
“It’s not a fact that other parties, such as China, are strongly interested in similar agreements. But for the United States, this is an extra way to declare that they are not gangsters from the main road and do not just destroy existing agreements, but are willing to enter into new ones, knowing at the same time that they will offer, in particular, Russia, much less interesting conditions than those that operated so far, ”he concluded.
Earlier, Trump said he wants to conclude a new contract to replace the INF. He stressed that Washington will not abide by the terms of the deal if the other party violates them.
