The choice of Alexei Navalny, who freely moves around the world, as a “brand” of the global sanctions regime for human rights violations looks extremely strange, if Europe needs the image of a political prisoner, it should remember, for example, the creator of WikiLeaks Julian Assange, a member of the State Duma Committee on International Elena Panina.
Earlier, the EU High Representative for Foreign and Security Policy Josep Borrell said at a plenary session of the European Parliament that the global regime of sanctions for violations of human rights and humanitarian law being created in the European Union could be named after Navalny.
In an interview with RIA Novosti, Panina noted that the imposition of sanctions is a key element of the repressive strategy of modern Western structures, with the help of which they assert their superiority, the right to dictate their will to others.
“At the same time, the choice of the Russian oppositionist as a“ brand ”of such sanctions looks extremely strange. It is difficult to imagine as a humanitarian victim of an incumbent politician who calmly travels around the country, conducts election campaigns, and also freely travels for medical treatment abroad – first to Spain , and now to Germany, “added Panina.
She recalled that the West at one time did not release the prisoner in The Hague Slobodan Milosevic for treatment in Russia, actually dooming him to death, and now is preparing to extradite Assange, who is threatened with the death penalty there.
“If Borrell needs the image of a political prisoner suffering for humanitarian rights, let him turn to the image of the creator of WikiLeaks, or to the memory of people who were recently tortured in secret US prisons around the world,” Panina stated.
Navalny was hospitalized on August 20 in Omsk after he became ill on the plane. Based on the results of the examinations, the Omsk doctors called the main diagnosis a metabolic disorder, which caused a sharp change in blood sugar. It is not yet clear what caused it, but according to Omsk doctors, no poisons were found in Navalny’s blood and urine.
Later, the blogger was transported by plane to Germany. After that, the FRG government announced, citing military doctors, that Navalny was allegedly poisoned with a substance from the Novichok group of toxic warfare agents. On Monday, the Cabinet of Ministers of the Federal Republic of Germany said that the conclusions of German experts were confirmed by the laboratories of Sweden and France, in parallel, the OPCW, at the request of Berlin, is conducting its own research. In this regard, the Kremlin stated that Berlin did not inform Moscow of its conclusions, and the Russian Foreign Ministry stressed that Russia was waiting for a response from Germany to an official request on this situation.
The FRG authorities did not earlier deny that the German intelligence service BND had access to the Novichok military poisoning agent since the 1990s. One of the developers of the chemical warfare agent Leonid Rink has already stated that the data on the alleged poisoning of Navalny with a new variety of Novichok is nonsense, since there were no symptoms of poisoning with this substance.
On the day of Navalny’s hospitalization, the prosecutor’s office and the police began to conduct their checks. The Russian Embassy in Berlin said that they expect the German side to respond as quickly as possible to the request of the Russian Prosecutor General’s Office dated August 27 for legal assistance in the Navalny case. The RF IC had previously sent a statement from Navalny’s supporters to the West Siberian administration for verification that the opposition was allegedly attempted. Press Secretary of the Russian President Dmitry Peskov noted that de facto investigative actions on the situation with Navalny are underway, if the presence of a poisonous substance is confirmed, the investigation will be open and de jure.
On September 7, the Berlin clinic Charite reported that Navalny’s condition improved, he was taken out of a coma and disconnected from the ventilator. On Tuesday, Navalny published his first photo after coming out of a coma and said that he had been able to breathe on his own all day the previous day.
