The launch of the Power of Siberia gas pipeline is a historically significant event for citizens of the Russian Federation and China, creating prospects for accelerated development of regions and related sectors of the economy, said Sergei Zheleznyak, member of the State Duma’s Committee on International Affairs.

Gazprom and Chinese CNPC signed an agreement on gas supplies to China via the eastern route on May 21, 2014. It was concluded for 30 years and envisages an annual supply of 38 billion cubic meters of Russian gas to China. The amount of the contract is 400 billion dollars. Deliveries of Russian gas to China via the Power of Siberia gas pipeline began earlier on Monday, gas pipeline was launched during a teleconference with the participation of Russian President Vladimir Putin, Chinese President Xi Jinping and Gazprom Management Committee Chairman Alexei Miller.

“The launch of the Power of Siberia gas pipeline connecting Russia and China will increase the energy security and investment attractiveness of our countries. This is a historically significant event for the Russian and Chinese peoples, creating prospects for accelerated development of regions and related sectors of the economy, new jobs, improving living standards people, “Zheleznyak quoted his press service.

He stressed that effective Russian-Chinese cooperation is a response to the US desire to prevent the strengthening of new world development centers and gives an example of constructive interaction between the two largest states.

Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping launched the supply of Russian gas to China via the Power of Siberia gas pipeline. The prospects for the project and the future of gas negotiations between Russia and Europe on Sputnik radio were assessed by energy security expert Igor Yushkov.

“Unscrupulous attempts by the United States to maintain dominance in world energy markets in Europe and other regions do not achieve their goals. The policy of brutal protectionism and the methods of trade wars that Washington, Russia and China use are opposed to equal partnership and mutual strengthening of their positions in the international arena,” the deputy said .
The parliamentarian noted that the development of economic relations between Russia and China has a positive effect on the formation of common views on resolving existing global problems that countries jointly uphold at international venues, including the UN, BRICS, SCO and others.
