Sergey Zheleznyak: “The American hawks initially chose to communicate the hopeless language of ultimatums”

Member of the State Duma Committee on International Affairs Sergey Zheleznyak:

“The conditions that have been talked about in Washington in connection with the INF Committee should not be discriminatory towards our country. The United States wants Russia to preserve our contractual obligations in the complete absence of the intention to fulfill ours. Such a dialogue is unproductive and will not lead to constructive changes capable of maintaining the balance of power and security.

As previously announced by the leadership of Russia, we will consider only specific proposals by the United States that meet our national interests. The signing by the head of our state of suspending participation in the INF Treaty is a reciprocal step by Russia for inadequate US actions to preserve the balance of power and ensure the necessary level of security for our country. The conditions put forward by the American side are unacceptable for Russia. In order to please Washington, we will not give up our own security and destroy weapons systems that, by their characteristics, are not subject to the INF.

Obviously, the United States did not plan to negotiate under the agreement. American hawks initially chose to communicate the hopeless language of ultimatums. The main task of the American maneuvers with the agreement is aimed at one goal – to untie our hands for the production and deployment in Europe and other regions of the world of new weapons that directly violate the Treaty. Destructive steps by the United States with respect to the INF Treaty destroy the collective security system and push other countries to increase military spending. ”
