Swiss parliamentarian Lilian Mori Pasquier was confirmed as the chairman of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE). This was announced on Monday at the opening of the June session of the Assembly in Strasbourg.
The confirmation of the new PACE head in office was held without a vote. Pasquier was the only contender for this post, and her candidacy was approved by the applause of the deputies.
Pasquier represents the parliamentary group “Socialists, Democrats and” Greens “. As the PACE President, the Swiss politician replaced his Italian colleague for the socialist faction, Michele Nicoletti, who held this position in January 2018.
Nicoletti was forced to resign after failing to confirm the deputy mandate in Italy, having suffered defeat in his constituency at the March parliamentary elections in the country. Thus, his tenure as PACE President was the shortest in history.
