Leonid Slutsky, the head of the State Duma’s committee on international affairs, called the actions of US intelligence agencies against State Duma deputy Inga Yumasheva absolutely illegal.
Earlier, Russian Ambassador to the United States Anatoly Antonov said that Yumashev was taken to a separate room upon arrival. Documents were taken from her, and a person who introduced himself as an FBI officer asked her “unclear and unacceptable questions” for an hour, after which he offered to continue communication in a cafe in an informal setting. The Russian Embassy in the United States sent a note of protest to the State Department with a demand to clarify the reasons for the incident. State Duma Speaker Vyacheslav Volodin called the behavior of US intelligence agencies with respect to Yumasheva a cynical provocation.
“The detention and interrogation by the FBI of the State Duma deputy Inga Yumasheva at the New York airport is an unprecedented audacity provocation. The United States, having unleashed a diplomatic war in 2016, continues to act low and vile, against all the rules,” Slutsky wrote in his Telegram channel.
He recalled that Yumasheva is a member of the State Duma Committee on International Affairs and “like all deputies has a diplomatic passport.”
“Because of this, I regard the hourly detention of Yumasheva by FBI officers as absolutely unlawful. The Russian Embassy in the United States has already sent a note of protest. We are awaiting reactions and explanations from the American authorities,” the head of the Duma committee concluded.
