Leonid Slutsky, Chairman of the State Duma Committee on International Affairs:
“The President’s proposal means that Russia is again offering a real way out of the situation that threatens to turn into a deadlock because of the position of the American side. The extension of the START Treaty for a year without any conditions will allow the negotiation process, including without looking back at the pre-election situation in the United States. Strategic stability issues require a conscious, professional and depoliticized approach.
START III remains almost the last cornerstone of the treaty base on arms control and strategic stability. And that’s why it is so important to keep the contract. It is important not only for Russia or the United States, but for the peaceful future of the entire planet. It is on this basis that Russia announced back in 2019 that it was ready to prolong the START Treaty.
We will wait for Washington’s response to Moscow’s proposal. I hope the USA will appreciate its reasonableness and constructiveness.
