Chairman of the State Duma Committee on International Affairs, Head of the RFM Leonid Slutsky:
“The Russian Peace Fund, in cooperation with the Public Chamber of the Russian Federation and the Office of the Commissioner for Human Rights in the Russian Federation, decided to provide material assistance to the families of Russian sailors arrested in Greece, totaling 1.3 million rubles.
Russian citizens are accused by the Greek authorities of transporting illegal migrants. But, judging by the primary evidence, the situation is rather confused, and the guilt of our guys is not as clear as the Greek Themis interprets it. The Russians again found themselves in a difficult situation away from their homeland; they need qualified legal assistance and support.
We will continue, with further coordination with all relevant departments, to keep this case in the spotlight, as well as other cases involving arrests or violations of the rights of Russian citizens abroad.
The State Duma Committee on International Affairs singled out in a separate dossier the issues of assisting Russians who found themselves in a difficult life situation abroad. As part of this work, we plan to come to the creation of a clearly working mechanism of assistance and response in such cases. ”
