Leonid Slutsky, Chairman of the State Duma Committee on International Affairs:
“The State Duma today adopted an appeal to the parliaments of European states in connection with the repressive actions of the authorities of the Republic of Latvia against Russian-speaking journalists. The draft was submitted for consideration by the International Affairs Committee and was unanimously supported by the deputies.
“Deputies of the State Duma appeal to the parliaments of European states to condemn the gross violations by the Republic of Latvia of its international obligations to respect freedom of speech, as well as to support the free work of the media, to oppose the use of force and censorship as tools of political struggle and information confrontation” , – said in the text of the appeal. Today we will send it to European parliaments and inter-parliamentary organizations.
What is happening in the Baltic republics around freedom of speech cannot meet European standards and democratic norms. Persecutions have been launched against the Russian-language media in the literal sense. There is a systematic violation of human rights. Russian parliamentarians intend to continue to raise the issue of harassment of the Russian-language press in the Baltic states at major inter-parliamentary platforms such as PACE and the OSCE PA. We will do this both in face-to-face format and in video conferencing mode ”.
