Leonid Slutsky: “US withdrawal from the Open Skies Treaty is a destructive decision that could jeopardize the military security system on the European continent”

Chairman of the State Duma Committee on International Affairs Leonid Slutsky:

“US withdrawal from the Open Skies Treaty is a destructive decision that could jeopardize the military security system on the European continent. This will be another step by the current US administration to destroy key arms control agreements following the collapse of the INF Treaty. Yes, and the same: unfounded accusations against the Russian Federation (which we, by the way, have not yet seen) of violating the provisions of the DON while refusing to settle similar claims in our own direction. Once again I want to note that Russia has never violated the Treaty. Again, in contrast from the USA, which simply ignore the numerous problems with the implementation of DON.

Of course, Russia has a plan for responding to American steps on the Don, although the Treaty is multilateral in nature. I am sure that we will make an informed decision in full compliance with the goals of protecting national security.

The Open Skies Treaty is one of the few remaining instruments to ensure mutual trust, predictability, and transparency. Now its real “added value” will depend, including on the reaction of the US European allies in the NATO bloc to the statement of the American administration, as well as whether they will follow Washington’s example.”
