Chairman of the State Duma Committee on International Affairs Leonid Slutsky:
“We discussed the situation around Iran on the Russia-24 TV channel, including missile attacks on US bases in Iraq after the assassination of General Suleymani.
The main thing here, in my opinion, is to hear Tehran: the proportional answer is complete. Iran does not want war, and this is stated at different levels. This should allow us to move from the plane of military confrontation to the political plane, to the negotiation process. Otherwise, the consequences could go far beyond the region.
It all depends on the further steps of the United States, the ball, as they say on their side. President Trump tweeted that “everything is fine” and the damage is being assessed, promising to make an official statement later.
But here one really cannot allow escalation, further bloodshed and expansion into large-scale military operations. We will talk about this within the framework of the resource of parliamentary diplomacy with our Iranian colleagues. With a number of them we are already on a straight wire.
It is necessary to return the situation to common sense. I hope that, finally, a reaction of the UN will follow, or at least a response to the appeals of the Permanent Representative of Iran.”
