The leadership of Japan shouldn’t connect issues of concluding a peace treaty with Russia with the Kurile Islands, these files should be “untied” – believes the head of the State Duma Committee on International Affairs Leonid Slutsky.
“The problem, in my opinion, is in the fact that Japanese political establishment and its leadership in vain connect issues of concluding a peace treaty, which will be the last step in overcoming the historical archaic paradox that we still haven’t signed it with Japan, and the issue of the Kurile islands. “These two dossiers are to be untied” – Leonid Slutsky said on Friday during his press conference.
The politician believes that the peace treaty should be “just signed and put an end” to this archaism sending it “into the history textbooks.”
“I think that in Tokyo they will carefully study (this question). It will take some time.East is a delicate matter”he concluded.
Earlier on Friday, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe announced his readiness to hold a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in November-December this year, but did not specify either the expected dates or the possible venue for such a summit. At the same time, the Japanese prime minister said that the official Tokyo maintains the position that “first there must be a solution to the territorial issue, and then – the conclusion of a peace treaty.”
