Leonid Slutsky, Chairman of the State Duma Committee on International Affairs:
In the midterm elections to the US Congress, there were no surprises. According to all forecasts, Democrats get a majority in the House of Representatives, Republicans are strengthening their positions in the Senate. This outcome shows that the split in American society persists.
In my opinion, this election was a kind of vote of confidence in Trump’s policy, an indicator of support for his positions. And that is why they attached so much importance. However, it was also obvious that any outcome would increase the pressure of Congress on the American leader.
With the Democrats obtaining the majority of seats in the House of Representatives, control over all previous legislative initiatives in the sphere of foreign policy will only get tougher and firstly this will happen on the Russian track. Even before the results, there were calls to introduce the second package of absolutely absurd sanctions in the “Skripal case”. Political speculation has not end, the “anti-Russian card” is still in the sleeve of Trump’s opponents. Unfortunately,no major changes in Russian-American relations can be expected because of this.
However, we still hope that common sense on Capitol Hill will sooner or later prevail. We will continue contacts and cooperation with those American politicians who are ready to engage in a constructive dialogue. And there are plenty of them.
