The Chairman of the Committee on International Affairs of the State Duma Leonid Slutsky:
During the session from January to July we recommended to adopt 10 laws for ratification. Among them vitally important Protocol on Mutual Assistance in Criminal Matters and 3 basic Strategic Partnership Agreements with Belize, the Commonwealth of Dominica and the Arab Republic of Egypt.
The Committee unanimously recommended the State Duma to adopt the draft law submitted by the President of Russia Vladimir Putin on suspending the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty (IRNFT) considering it to be the only possible step in response to the policy of the USA. The USA have been implementing a clearly destructive course of breaking down cornerstone agreements in the field of arms control throughout the years, directing unverified accusations and ultimatums to Russia.
The Committee organized Extended Parliamentary Hearings on provision of strategic stability under the circumstances of the world security architecture changing. The representatives from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Defense and leading experts and scientists of Russia have participated in the event. The delegates also discussed the causes and consequences of the abolition of the IRNFT and prospects for prolongation of the New Start. As the matter of fact, the discussion ran about the prevention of an arms race and waging the «Cold war 2.0» and about the role of the parliamentary diplomacy.
The Committee also held a Round Table «The improvement of strategy of legal protection of Russian citizens abroad». Many respected human rights activists, legal practitioners, political scientists, the representatives of all the competent agencies and relatives of illegally convicted Russian citizens abroad- BogdanaOsipenko’s mother, Maria Butina’s father, Kirill Vishinskiy’s wife. This issue is not simple, but very important. We are definitely going to continue further efforts in that direction, that is one of our priorities.
The Committee also took an active part in organization of the Second International Forum “Development of Parliamentarism”. It can be compared now to the UN Assemblies, IPU (Inter-Parliamentary Union): 132 delegations visited Moscow and the number of participants exceeded 800 people. The agenda of the Forum included all the relevant issues.
Digital Economy Development, combating the drug menace, the role of the parliaments in the global policy of the XXI century.
Now we have a new Parliament session ahead. Its international agenda is expected to be no less intense.
