Chairman of the Committee on International Affairs, MP Slutsky:
“From January to July, my colleagues and I reviewed and recommended the adoption of 10 ratification laws. Among them are the most important Protocol to the Council of Europe Convention on Mutual Legal Assistance in Criminal Matters and 3 basic Agreements on the establishment of relations and strategic partnership of Russia with such countries as Belize, the Commonwealth of Dominica and the Arab Republic of Egypt.
One of the key moments was the work on a bill submitted by the President of the Russian Federation on the suspension of the Treaty on the Elimination of Medium and Short Range Missiles. The committee unanimously recommended him to accept the State Duma, realizing that this is a forced and only possible step in response to the policy of the American partners. For many years, the United States has been pursuing a destructive line on breaking the cornerstone agreements in the field of arms control, while putting forward unsubstantiated accusations and impracticable ultimatums to Russia.
In the development of this topic, the Committee also organized and held Major Parliamentary hearings on ensuring strategic stability in the context of changing global security architecture, which were attended by representatives of the Russian Foreign Ministry, the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation, leading scientists and experts. The causes and possible consequences of the cessation of the existence of the SMRM were discussed, as well as prospects for the extension of the START system (START-3). In essence, it was about how to prevent the arms race, further unleashing the “Cold War 2.0” and about the role of parliamentary diplomacy in these processes.
The committee also held a round table: “Improving the strategy of legal protection of Russian citizens abroad.” It was attended by reputable human rights defenders, lawyers, political scientists, representatives of all relevant departments, as well as relatives and friends of illegally convicted citizens of the Russian Federation abroad – the mother of Bogdana Osipova, the father of Maria Butina, the wife of Cyril Vyshinsky. The topic is not easy, but very important. And we will definitely continue to work in this direction, this is one of the priority areas of work.
The Committee also took an active part in organizing the Second International Forum on the Development of Parliamentarism. In terms of scale, it can now be compared with the assemblies of the IPU: 132 delegations came to Mosca, and the number of participants exceeded 800 people. The agenda of the Forum included all the pressing issues of our time: world security, the development of the digital economy, the fight against the drug threat, the role of parliaments in the 21st century international politics.
We have a new parliamentary season ahead. He promises to be no less saturated on his international agenda. ”
