Leonid Slutsky, Chairman of the State Duma Committee on International Affairs:
“The US’s readiness to negotiate the INF Treaty is certainly a positive signal, if not for the next“ conditions ”, more like an ultimatum. We never refused a constructive dialogue on arms control issues and always called for the American side. Russia offered a whole series initiatives to save the INF Treaty, by taking unprecedentedly open measures to demonstrate compliance with its obligations under the treaty.
However, overseas partners have not only not heard, but, apparently, still do not want to hear. The “mantra” on the commitment of the INF Treaty is only a cover for the US plans for the final breakdown of the treaty, for which Washington deliberately tries to put the burden on Moscow. Moreover, cynically and brazenly, in the logic of “double standards.”
But in any case, let’s hope that common sense will win. And an equal dialogue on the preservation, and maybe even the expansion of the treaty base on arms control will be possible.
In the meantime, Russia is forced to suspend its participation in the INF.
