Chairman of the Committee on International Affairs Leonid Slutsky:
I think that the speech of the US president was more focused on the mid-term elections in the Congress than on the solution of some strategic tasks that are spoken from the rostrum of the UN General Assembly. The speech was in the usual emotional key, glorifying America and, in fact, himself.
Trump began the speech with the fact that over the past two years the United States has made deafening successes in the economy. The hall met his words with laughter, but this did not embarrass the American leader at all. His whole message was mainly intended for “one-story America”, that supported Trump in the presidential elections in 2016.
The praise of the United States, the criticism of Iran, Washington is at the forefront in solving all the world problems, including in the fight against terrorism and the inter-Korean settlement, with ascribing to itself all possible successes …
In the same vein Trump suddenly attacked OPEC, which, it is said, robbed the whole world, and lamented that China had stolen jobs from America. Russia was mentioned once in the context of Germany’s criticism of the Nord Stream-2 and Poland’s praise for the development of projects not related to the Russian Federation.
At the same time, he did not fail to say that the US has become the largest energy power that is ready to supply resources to world markets. And everything else in the same spirit of pro-Washington propaganda.
I think that every passage is plenty of pre-election rhetoric. At the same time there was nothing unusual or unexpected.
The speech should not be regarded from the point of view of the UN framework, it is only Trump’s framework, his struggle for popularity in the country – especially on the eve of the midterm elections to the Congress. Emotional and very superficial.
