The cooperation program will jointly implement a number of projects of the Republic of Karelia and associations of Finnish municipalities in North Karelia, Kainuu and Oulu. The agreement on financing and implementation of the program of cross-border cooperation “Karelia” for the period 2014-2020 was ratified at the plenary session of the State Duma on July 26.
In 2014, President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin decided to continue cooperation with the European Union and EU member states within the framework of cross-border cooperation programs for the period 2014-2020.
The Government expects that the format for the implementation of the program between Karelia and Finland will be an effective tool for resolving issues of economic and social development. In addition, due to it, it will be possible to attract additional sources of funding for regional initiatives, the document says.
Also at the meeting on July 26, the State Duma ratified the Agreement on the financing and implementation of the cross-border cooperation program “Russia-South-East Finland” for 2014-2020 and the Agreement on Cooperation of the Arctic Regions of the Russian Federation with the Scandinavian countries and the EU Kolarctic.
“Cross-border cooperation contributes to the creation of a zone of good-neighborliness. Within the framework of such programs, it is possible to solve very quickly many tasks, including those aimed at raising the living standards of border subjects, “noted Svetlana Zhurova, First Deputy Chairman of the International Affairs Committee, ratified by the Parliament. 35 subjects of the Russian Federation adopted their laws on cooperation with the border regions of foreign states, the deputy said.
According to the Ministry of Economic Development, the total amount of financing of all agreements ratified by the State Duma today is 123 million euros.
