Leonid Slutsky, Chairman of the State Duma Committee on International Affairs, called the “starting point” and “landmark” visit of the State Duma deputies to India. Slutsky said: parliamentarians from Russia agreed with their Indian colleagues that the meeting of the Russian-Indian inter-parliamentary high-level commission will now be held annually.
“A landmark, very eventful visit to India took place, it became the starting point for building up inter-parliamentary contacts between our countries. Over the 20 years of the existence of the high-level inter-parliamentary commission, we only had the fifth meeting, now it will be annual, ”said the deputy.
Slutsky added that the parliamentarians agreed on cooperation between the relevant committees. “In particular, our committee [State Duma Committee on International Affairs] will hold a joint meeting with the Foreign Affairs Committee of the lower house of the Indian Parliament,” he said. At the meeting, the representatives of Russia and India will discuss topical issues of the international agenda, including the development of trade and economic cooperation, as well as the sanctions dossier.
During the official visit of State Duma deputies to India, the speaker of the lower house of parliament, Vyacheslav Volodin, held talks with the country’s prime minister, Narendra Modi, and conveyed to him the words of welcome from Russian President Vladimir Putin. The head of the State Duma also met with the head of the upper chamber of the Indian parliament, Venkayya Naidu.
