Aleksey Chepa: Biden will be credited with “saving Ukraine” after talking with Putin

Some relaxation of the situation in the context of Ukraine can happen only if the talks between the presidents of Russia and the United States, Vladimir Putin and Joe Biden, continue soon, said Alexei Chepa, First Deputy Chairman of the State Duma International Affairs Committee, in an interview with the Radiotochka NSN Telegram channel.

Putin and Biden held talks via video link on December 7. The heads of state discussed a wide range of issues, including the deployment of NATO troops near Russian borders and the exacerbation of the situation in Ukraine.

“As a result of the negotiations, there are no losers, because they were preparing for these negotiations, and all that we see, all this information hysteria, is a certain political game. For America, Biden stopped the Russian invasion of Ukraine – this is what the negotiations will look like. The President of the United States will receive a large number of points in his favor. All this hysteria, this “Ukrainian bubble”, if you can call it that, was inflated specifically for these negotiations. And Putin has clearly shown that we still have “red lines” that the Americans do not yet recognize. The talks showed that Russia understands that NATO’s eastward movement and the use of Ukraine as a springboard for NATO is unacceptable, “Chepa said.

According to him, as a result of negotiations, the heads of state have decided on the main task of strategic stability in the world.

“The main directions of action on Ukraine, on the advancement of NATO to the east, on cybersecurity issues and some other pressing problems in the world were determined. In fact, it was a continuation of the Geneva summit, the main tasks were set. I think that if the negotiations continue relatively soon – regarding Ukraine, for example – then some acuteness of the situation will be removed, ”the deputy stressed.

Chepa added that the US and NATO would not agree to legally fix NATO’s non-eastward expansion. The deputy also commented on the exclusion of sanctions from Nord Stream 2 from the US defense budget.

“There is still a lot of work to be done to legally secure NATO’s non-advancement to the east. The fact that the sanctions against Nord Stream 2 were removed from the draft defense budget is a positive step. In any case, the project will start working, most likely in the near future, ”the deputy summed up.

An Americanist, leading researcher at the Center for Security Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences Konstantin Blokhin, in an interview with the Radiotochka NSN Telegram channel, noted that the topic of Ukraine would overshadow all other significant issues in telephone conversations between Russian President Vladimir Putin and his American counterpart Joe Biden.
