The Secretariat of the IPU sent an invitation to the Assembly in St. Petersburg to 173 countries

The Secretariat of the Inter-Parliamentary Union sent formal invitations to the 137th Assembly of the IPU, which will be held from 14 to 18 October in St. Petersburg, 173 member parliaments and 11 associate members of the organization, Konstantin Kosachev, the head of the international committee of the Federation Council, told journalists on Monday.

He stressed that the Russian Organizing Committee for the preparation for the assembly is in close cooperation with the Union Secretariat. “The official site of the assembly ipu137russia.org, which has all the necessary useful information for guests and participants,” has started, Kosachev said.

He recalled that the 100th Assembly of the Ministry of Railways was held in Moscow in 1998. “It has been a rare honor for Russia to once again host the world parliamentary community and demonstrate to the whole world our hospitality and cordiality,” the senator said.

According to Kosachev, already now you can talk about a busy agenda in St. Petersburg. Even before the official opening ceremony on October 14, the Executive Committee, the Human Rights Committee for parliamentarians, the Middle East Committee, the Forum of Women Parliamentarians will meet in the Tauride Palace.

He added that the main theme of the assembly will officially be “Promoting cultural pluralism and peace through interfaith and interethnic dialogue.” “This topic will allow us to hold a general debate in the line of respect and encouragement of intercultural dialogue in order to strengthen peace and social stability, create an atmosphere conducive to mutual understanding at all levels,” the parliamentarian said.

Kosachev is confident that the Assembly in St. Petersburg will go down in the history of the Ministry of Railways and because of the election of the new chairman of this oldest political international organization of the world. The Russian delegation has already begun consultations with the candidates nominated by the national and geopolitical groups for this post, he added.

“We proceed from the fact that the next chairman of the IPU should continue constructive and meaningful work of the current head of Saber Chowdhury with all member parliaments based on the principles of equality, respect for sovereignty and mutual interests,” the senator said.

The Assembly will adopt the only resolution “Towards the 20th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Democracy: the commonality of our diversity”, initiated by the Russian delegation, whose speaker is Ilyas Umakhanov, the vice-speaker of the Federation Council. At the moment the co-rapporteurs are at the final stage of coordinating the final text of the resolution, which should be officially handed over to the Ministry of Railways no later than July 1 of this year, stated Kosachev.

The senator said that the initiative of colleagues from the IPA CIS, which proposed the establishment of the International Day of Parliamentarism on June 30 in honor of the first assembly of the Ministry of Railways in 1889, is being discussed. “We expect that this idea will be supported by the majority of parliamentary delegations in St. Petersburg,” the legislator stressed.
