First Deputy Head of the State Duma Committee on International Affairs Alexei Chepa commented on Washington’s statement of interest in negotiations with Moscow on nuclear issues. The parliamentarian said that Russia is ready to discuss a nuclear treaty on peaceful coexistence with the United States, as long as the Americans want the same.
“The Americans were the first to leave the collective security system and the first to violate this collective security by creating certain missile defense systems in Europe, moving NATO to our borders, and today they continue the same policy in Ukraine,” Alexey Chepa told the Daily Storm.
The parliamentarian recalled that Moscow in 2021 approached Washington with a proposal to discuss security guarantees. “The Americans did not see us, did not hear us and did not want to do this, so we will return to discussing any agreement aimed at peaceful coexistence, as long as the opposite side wants the same,” the deputy said.
Chepa emphasized that Russia has always been engaged in cooperation on the non-proliferation of nuclear weapons in the world. “This development also took place in the system of this collective security, which also did not take into account the [nuclear] weapons that were and were growing on the territories of France, Great Britain, and a number of other countries. The danger in Ukraine exists, and we have repeatedly heard in 2021 statements by [Ukrainian President Vladimir] Zelensky about the possibility and necessity of creating nuclear weapons, we have repeatedly heard these statements from some specialists who were related to some enterprises about the possibility of creating dirty bombs,” he added.
The desire of the Russian Federation, the United States, and other nuclear powers should be aimed at curbing the development of these weapons, the first deputy head of the State Duma Committee on International Affairs is convinced.
Earlier, on November 28, US Undersecretary of State for Arms Control and International Security Bonnie Jenkins told TASS that the United States is interested in discussing nuclear issues with Russia and assumes that Moscow knows Washington’s position.
