Maria Butina, a member of the State Duma Committee on International Affairs, called the exchange of Russian pilot Konstantin Yaroshenko, who spent 12 years in an American prison, for a US citizen Trevor Reed, an incredible victory, on April 27 to a Zvezda correspondent.
“I believe that this exchange, especially in the current conditions of international tension, outright Russophobia, is just an incredible victory, an achievement of our diplomacy, so we still need such victories,” Butina said.
Maria Butina stressed that Russian diplomats “do not abandon their own.” For 12 years there was a negotiation process for the release of Yaroshenko.
“Honestly, there was little hope,” Butina said.
According to Maria Butina, she hopes that the Russian Foreign Ministry will continue to fight for all Russian citizens in US prisons.
“Many are still in prison. I hope that it will be possible to achieve a positive decision on them and return these people home,” the deputy stressed.
Recall that Konstantin Yaroshenko was arrested in 2010 and sentenced to 20 years in prison on charges of preparing to transport a large consignment of drugs.
Former Marine and student from Texas Trevor Reed received nine years in prison for using force against police officers.
Recall that the exchange of Russian and American citizens took place at the Turkish airport. Former prisoners were simultaneously escorted to Russian and US planes.
