Maria Butina predicted serious problems for the United States in the event of a referendum on the withdrawal of Texas from the country

Representatives of the US Republican Party from Texas want to hold a referendum on whether the state should leave the country. State Duma Deputy Maria Butina, who studied at a university in the United States and was later arrested there on charges of working as a “foreign agent,” does not rule out that a popular vote could be held in Texas. In this case, the United States faces serious problems, she believes. Americanist Vladimir Bruter notes that “no one will let Texas secede from the United States.”

“As to whether such a referendum could be allowed in Texas—why not?! I think it’s quite,” Maria Butina told the Daily Storm.

“‎If there are midterm elections now and if their legitimacy does not suit those who will participate in the elections in Texas, I do not exclude that they can put such an issue on the agenda. This is fraught with very serious problems for the United States, and I believe that the upcoming election cycle will be very difficult for them, ”she said. The parliamentarian also stressed that Russia has not interfered and does not plan to interfere in the internal affairs of the United States.

Vladimir Bruter, an expert at the International Institute for Humanitarian and Political Studies, in an interview with the Daily Storm, recalled that “no one’s permission is needed” to hold a referendum in Texas. He added that American Republicans, and not just Texas party representatives, are “probably disadvantaged” by a popular vote to leave the state.

“Of course, no one will let the state leave, at least now. And I don’t think they have such intentions. They want to defiantly make a fuss and get something for themselves,” the expert believes.

Bruter also explained why state officials want it to secede from the US: “Texas is a very successful state by American standards and doesn’t want to finance the rest of America.”

Texas Republicans intend to put a referendum on the 2023 election agenda for the people of the state to determine whether it should “restore its status as an independent state.” The party noted that “an independent Texas is an eternal idea that tends to flourish when a Democrat takes the Oval Office.”
