The resumption of the work of the Russian Embassy in Libya will have a beneficial effect on resolving issues of the release of Russians from prison, said Dmitry Novikov, First Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Committee on Foreign Affairs.
“The embassy will be able to more closely deal with the affairs of our citizens who are in difficult situations in Libya, including those in custody,” said Dmitry Novikov.
The parliamentarian also recalled two Russians detained by Libyan security officials, and noted that the entire mechanism of state capabilities should be involved to free our fellow citizens. At the same time, the resumption of the work of the diplomatic service is a serious step towards resolving the issue. The deputy’s words are quoted by Interfax.
“Of course, it would be better to be able to open an embassy directly on the territory of Libya, but the situation remains difficult, there are various risks,” Novikov added.
As previously reported, Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that the Russian embassy in Libya will again begin to work. At the same time, Chargé d’Affaires of Russia in Libya Jamshed Boltaev will be located in Tunisia.
Recall, a year ago, on July 5, 2019, it became known about the detention of two Russians by employees of the Libyan security agencies. They turned out to be the head of the field research group of the National Values Protection Fund Maxim Shugaley and his translator Samer Hassan Ali Sueifan. Both citizens are still in Libya.
