Elena Panina: “Armin Lashet could improve relations between Russia and Germany”

If the new head of the ruling CDU party in Germany, Armin Laschet, becomes chancellor, there is a chance that the crisis in relations between Russia and the FRG will end, says Elena Panina, a member of the State Duma’s international affairs committee. RIA Novosti reports.

Earlier it was reported that Lashet became the new chairman of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) party. According to the election results, he can replace Angela Merkel as chancellor.

According to Panina, Lashet is known as a conservative centrist, he is distinguished by a thoughtful position on a number of issues, including those concerning relations between Russia and Germany.

“There is a hope that the crisis in relations between our countries will be overcome,” the MP said.

Panina believes that if Laschet becomes chancellor, the likelihood of the completion of the Nord Stream 2 project will increase. “It seems that Lashet has a strong enough political position to facilitate the completion of the project, since it is, first of all, in the interests of Germany itself,” the parliamentarian added.
