The first statements by Maya Sadu, who is winning the presidential elections in Moldova, about economic recovery as the country’s top priority, inspire hope for constructive cooperation between Russia and the country’s new leader, Elena Panina, a member of the State Duma Committee on International Affairs, told RIA Novosti.
On Sunday, the second round of presidential elections was held in Moldova. The citizens of Moldova elected the head of state for the next four years. The contenders in the second round of the elections were President Igor Dodon, who is running for a second term, and Sandu, the former prime minister and leader of the Action and Solidarity Party. After processing 100% of the protocols from the polling stations, Sandu wins the second round of presidential elections with 57.75% of the vote.
“Maia Sandu is known as a pro-Western politician and a supporter of close ties with Romania. At the same time, her first statements after her victory in the elections, in which the restoration of the country’s economy was declared the main priority, inspire hope for constructive cooperation between Russia and the new Moldovan leader,” said Panina …
The parliamentarian recalled that Moldova is tied with the Russian Federation by the closest economic ties, the development of which largely depends on the welfare of Moldovans. In addition, Russia is a traditional market for Moldovan wine, for agricultural products, which, according to Panina, are not expected in Europe.
“The main thing is that Sandu’s first statements do not diverge from her real deeds. The new authorities need to understand that any attempts to” unfreeze “the Transnistrian conflict or squeeze out Russian peacekeepers from there are fraught with grave consequences for the country,” the MP stated.
