Elena Panina: “In the context of the global crisis, sanctions harm their initiators”

Any sanctions in a pandemic look like an anachronism. So the State Duma deputy, member of the Committee on Foreign Affairs Elena Panina (United Russia) commented on a statement by European Commission spokesman Peter Stano, who stated that “the EU leadership sees no reason to lift sanctions against the Russian Federation, since they do not undermine Russia’s ability to fight the coronavirus.”

According to Panina, an EU spokesman forgot to mention that sanctions also do not “undermine” Russia’s ability to help Italy, left to its own devices by its neighbors and partners in the European Union.

“European officials, apparently, are not aware that in a pandemic and the global economic crisis, any sanctions look like an absolute anachronism and often harm not only those against whom they are directed, but also those who introduce them,” Panina stated.
