Member of the Committee on Foreign Affairs Elena Panina:
“The Chairman of the Estonian Parliament, Henn Põlluaas, in his New Year’s address reiterated that the Tartu Peace Treaty has not lost its force and is still valid on the issue of the Russian-Estonian border.
In other words, it again claims to be “native Estonian lands”.
And, apparently, he will do this further.
It is possible that territorial claims to Russia expressed in the New Year’s address of Speaker Pylluaas are related to attempts to disrupt the upcoming 2020 World Congress of Finno-Ugric Peoples, to which Vladimir Putin is expected to arrive.
Recall that the presidents of Russia, Hungary and Finland, Vladimir Putin, Janos Ader and Sauli Niiniste were invited to the VIII World Congress of Finno-Ugric Peoples in Tartu, which will be held June 17-19, 2020. In October 2019, Estonian President KerstiKalyulayd sent an official invitation to the President of the Russian Federation, and, as expected, Putin’s visit could play an important role in improving good neighborly relations between the two countries.
But, apparently, not everyone in Estonia is happy with this prospect.”
