So the State Duma deputy, member of the Committee on Foreign Affairs Elena Panina (United Russia) commented on reports about the possibility of the US Congress adopting a new package of sanctions against Nord Stream 2, which would be directed against investors and companies that receive gas through the pipeline.
According to Panina, the American authorities did not dare to take such actions even at the peak of the Cold War under the rule of Ronald Reagan. Then the United States imposed sanctions on European firms that supplied equipment for the construction of the Yamal-Europe gas pipeline, but still did not dare to punish buyers of Soviet gas.
“In those days, Washington understood that it was necessary to stay within the framework of at least minimal respect for the Western European allies, and its motives were political in nature. Today, economic motives come first, the United States wants to guarantee the sale of 100 billion cubic meters of liquefied gas produced by them at all costs. By strictly forcing Germany to buy its LNG, the United States shows that they no longer have the principles of a market economy and free competition, ”Panina said.
