Sergei Zheleznyak: “The readiness to extend the START-3 Treaty voiced by the new US administration inspires hope and restrained optimism”

“The readiness to extend the START-3 Treaty voiced by the new US administration inspires hope and restrained optimism. It remains to wait for the real steps of our American partners in this matter. ” This was stated by Sergey Zheleznyak, a member of the State Duma Committee on International Affairs.

According to the politician: “During the pre-election campaign, Joe Biden indicated his position on the extension of the START-3 Treaty, which was fundamentally at odds with the position of Donald Trump. The previous US president will be remembered for his extremely inconsistent policy at home and on the world stage, where he managed to destroy almost all international agreements and spoil relations even with America’s traditional partners.

At the same time, Mr. Biden clearly wants to look in the eyes of the public as America’s hope, a messenger of peace, stability and democracy. In light of recent events in the United States, which trampled human rights, legality and democracy to smithereens, this will not be easy. Therefore, the US step towards the issue of preserving the collective security system, the most important part of which is START III, not only serves the interests of the US defense, but is also personally beneficial to the new head of the White House. Nuclear deterrence is too serious a topic to make a PR campaign out of it, but when it comes to the image of the US president, any pretext is good. ”

The politician stressed that Russia is not talking about any fundamentally new agreement on nuclear arms control: “It is necessary to extend the START-3 Treaty on existing conditions, thereby securing nuclear stability and collective security. Nuclear missile parity between Russia and the United States must be preserved. At the same time, it is possible that after the extension of the Treaty, it will be possible to discuss the improvement of the document so that it fully meets the international situation, ”the deputy believes.
