“It is advisable to talk about the readiness of the current US president to extend the START-3 Treaty only when we see the real steps of our American partners.” This was stated by Sergey Zheleznyak, a member of the State Duma Committee on International Affairs.
According to the politician: “One should not forget that any statements and messages from American politicians released in the US information field during the pre-election period are in the nature of the intentions of presidential candidates. Both fighters for the chair of the head of the White House are racing to issue policy statements, generously distributing promises to their voters, trying to win the hearts of new supporters in the remaining period. Such news reports are aimed at creating the image of a peacemaker in the person of the American president. Russia is wary of any kind of media stuffing and information leaks in the media, especially if it concerns such a serious and important topic as nuclear deterrence.
“There is no talk of any fundamentally new agreement on nuclear arms control in the remaining period before the US elections. Such documents undoubtedly require a long time and deep bilateral consultations. At the same time, we are convinced that it is necessary to extend the START-3 Treaty on the existing conditions, thereby securing nuclear stability and collective security. Nuclear missile parity between Russia and the United States must be preserved. Perhaps, after the extension of the Treaty, it will be possible to discuss further improvement of this document so that it fully meets the development of the international situation, ”the deputy added.
