Sergey Zheleznyak: “Russia may present financial claims to Latvia”

The statement of the Ministry of Justice of Latvia on the so-called donation of money to the budget of the USSR not only does not correspond to reality, but also distorts it. As a REGNUM correspondent reports on May 6, a member of the State Duma committee on international affairs, Sergei Zheleznyak (United Russia), said this.

“If you look at the mean statistics (now freely available) of the difficult period for our country in the 1990s, you can easily see that Latvia’s GDP per capita was 16.5, while consumption was 26.9. Latvia, like other Baltic republics, remained a subsidized region. Here it’s just right for Russia to make claims to Latvia, which of course we will not do, ”said Zheleznyak.

The Latvian SSR transferred almost half of its income to the Soviet Union, says Janis Bordans, head of the country’s ministry of justice. This will be taken into account by the commission for calculating damage to the republic from the “Soviet occupation”.
