“The agreement on the reduction of strategic offensive arms must be extended to maintain stability in the world, and only then discuss any new proposals. “The US idea of including China and the developed arms systems of Russia outside the current treaty should not become the reason for the termination of the existing treaty.” This was stated by a member of the State Duma Committee on Foreign Affairs Sergey Zheleznyak, commenting on the statement of the representative of the US State Department.
The politician said: “The US is recklessly continuing to manipulate the topic of the START-3 treaty, which is the practical last line to contain the arms race. The unbridled appetites of the Pentagon are growing and require constant financial support and thereby fuel the international situation.
Russia has repeatedly stated that it does not intend to get involved in a high-cost and extremely dangerous competition with the United States in the production of new weapons. Our country proceeds solely from the tasks of ensuring the protection of national sovereignty and the integrity of borders, as well as preventing the penetration of terrorist elements into the country.
“The United States has clearly different tasks, which include pressure on unfavorable regimes, supporting separatism in different countries and capturing new spheres of influence in order to expand American dominance in the world.”
“The extension of START-3 is necessary and possible while maintaining the conditions previously achieved and accepted by the parties. Expanding the Treaty at the expense of new participants, if it has the right to discussion, should be objective in nature, and not be limited to the wishes of the United States,” the parliamentarian believes.
