“The United States is trying to put pressure on the judicial system of the Russian Federation, which is absolutely unacceptable.” So commented on the statement by US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo in the case of espionage against American Paul Whelan, a member of the State Duma Committee on International Affairs Sergey Zheleznyak.
According to the deputy: “The United States has found a new reason for unfounded accusations against Russia, deciding that they can afford to influence the Russian court. Perhaps, in the USA, democratic principles and independence in the work of the judicial system are interpreted in such a peculiar way. Moreover, we have repeatedly come across American justice, which is extremely biased towards Russian citizens. The unsubstantiated accusations and frauds on which American law enforcers are accustomed to relying on Russians have unfortunately long been the norm. We remember how, thanks to the tremendous efforts of the public and the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Butina, who was tried to accuse the US of violating the law on foreign agents, was released from an American prison. It is well known how prejudiced against Russian citizens who find themselves in the hands of the FBI and the CIA.”
“Russian law enforcement officers, unlike their American counterparts, had enough direct evidence for a sound and fair court decision in respect of US citizen Whelan, implicated in espionage against Russia. Such crimes in all states are among the most serious for which life imprisonment is provided for in some countries,” the politician added.
