Svetlana Zhurova about Nikola Pashinyan’s statement about the danger of a new war in the South Caucasus and Russia’s participation in this

First Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Committee on International Affairs Svetlana Zhurova responded to the words of the Prime Minister of Armenia Nikol Pashinyan about the danger of starting a new war in the South Caucasus. In a conversation with Lenta.ru, the deputy ruled out Russian intervention in a possible conflict.

Earlier, Pashinyan said that in the South Caucasus there would be a danger of a new war between Armenia and Azerbaijan if Yerevan did not agree to territorial compromises with Baku. He explained that in order to avoid a new war, the Armenian authorities are forced to adjust the state border in the border areas of the Tavush region.

“Russia can provide resources to resolve the conflict, but cannot participate in the war. One way or another, both sides tried to win over to their side, but Russia tried to be neutral here, because the conflict is long. Everyone is right for their part; it is extremely difficult for Russia to take someone’s position one hundred percent. These are sovereign states, and they must solve this problem among themselves,” Zhurova said.

Will Russia intervene – only if we are talking about an attempt to resolve the situation through negotiations, avoiding war?

On March 5, the Azerbaijani parliament proposed conducting a military operation in Armenia in order to annex eight villages to the country’s territory. According to deputy Fazail Agamaly, the armed forces of the republic should start it as soon as possible, before Yerevan gains access to heavy weapons.
