Despite the problems in Russian-American relations, Russia and the United States continue to cooperate in several areas, as noted by Svetlana Zhurova, First Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Committee on International Affairs.
In an interview for Lenta.ru, she mentioned the areas of interaction within which Moscow and Washington maintain contacts.
“These are counter-terrorism issues, since we have agreements on mutual assistance and information exchange, and these are topics discussed with our [American] colleagues. And also the climate issues that the president mentioned. These two topics are neutral and not subject to politicization,” the deputy noted.
She also emphasized that regardless of disagreements between political elites, citizens of the two countries continue to maintain friendly relations.
“There may be disputes at the official level, but ordinary people continue to communicate with each other. They have common topics to discuss, with rare exceptions when this does not happen. Politicians come up with various ways to avoid friendly relations with each other and broadcast this to people, but people strive to behave friendly, with the exception of some cases,” concluded Zhurova.
On March 29, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov noted that Western countries have recently almost completely abandoned cooperation with Moscow in the fight against terrorism.
At the same time, he noted that previously the leaders of the United States, Europe and Great Britain advocated maintaining contacts on this issue regardless of economic and political differences.
