A meeting was held with the delegation of the Majlis of the Islamic Council of Iran

The State Duma Committee on International Affairs held a meeting with the delegation of the Majlis of the Islamic Council of Iran, headed by the Chairman of the Commission on National Security and Foreign Policy, Vahid Jalal Zadeh. On the Russian side, the following took part: head of the Committee on International Affairs and leader of the LDPR Leonid Slutsky, head of the Defense Committee Andrei Kartapolov, Vice Speaker of the State Duma Alexander Babakov and member of the Committee on International Affairs Maria Butina.

The discussion centered on the aggravation of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict and the world reaction to the Middle East events. “The situation in the region encourages us to compare notes and, perhaps, create a new format of interparliamentary interaction so that there is an opportunity for feedback,” said Leonid Slutsky. According to him, de-escalation and prevention of a humanitarian catastrophe in the Gaza Strip remains the most important task. “It is necessary to achieve a ceasefire and a sustainable truce in the Arab-Israeli conflict zone in accordance with the resolution of the UN General Assembly adopted at the 10th Emergency Special Session, as well as the return of the parties to the conflict to the negotiating table,” concluded the head of the Committee.

For his part, Vahid Jalal Zadeh said that he conveyed a message to State Duma Chairman Vyacheslav Volodin from the Speaker of the Iranian Mejlis, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, on the situation in the Middle East. “The events currently taking place in Gaza demonstrate very well how isolated Americans are. It seems to me that this is a very big failure for US foreign policy,” he said. The Iranian MP also thanked Russia for its position at the UN, which vetoed the “one-sided” US draft resolution in the Security Council, which did not even mention the need for a ceasefire.

In addition, aspects of inter-parliamentary cooperation, including on the legislative plane, as well as issues of interaction in the humanitarian, economic and cultural spheres were condemned at the meeting. An agreement was reached to hold a joint meeting of the State Duma Committees on International Affairs and Defense with the Commission of the Majlis of the Islamic Council of Iran on National Security and Foreign Policy.
