The head of the Inter-Parliamentary Union elected a representative of Mexico Gabriel Cuevas Barron. Speaking at the 137th IPU Assembly before the vote, Barron stated that if elected, she would work to increase the interactivity, efficiency and openness of the site.
The second candidate was Yvonne Passada of Uruguay. Passage in case of victory promised to improve control over the implementation of decisions taken by the Union. According to her, now only 20% of MPs of the Inter-Parliamentary Union control their implementation.
Barron’s campaign was initially more active – she stated that the work of parliamentarians should be based on the principles of multipolarity. As a result, 287 delegates voted for it, 70 for the Passage.
