The Expert Council under the Committee on International Affairs, with the participation of Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Georgy Borisenko, held a discussion titled “The Situation Surrounding Iran: Crisis Scenarios and Russia’s Role in Resolution.” Experts discussed the situation in the Middle East. The meeting was held behind closed doors.
Leonid Slutsky, Chairman of the Committee on International Affairs, noted that the escalating standoff between Tehran and Washington poses a serious threat to regional stability and security. He added that Russia has always supported the leadership of the Islamic Republic, and that Iran is a crucial partner for Russia.
“The rhetoric of US authorities toward Iran is only becoming harsher. Difficult Iranian-American negotiations regarding Tehran’s nuclear program took place in Geneva (the third round). Based on today’s media reports, one can conclude that they ended without result,” Leonid Slutsky pointed out.
Fyodor Lukyanov, Chairman of the Expert Council and Editor-in-Chief of the journal *Russia in Global Affairs*, believes that the conflict surrounding Iran is not merely regional; it reflects dynamics within the Middle East, the interests of major external powers, and the principles currently guiding the global stage. Lukyanov noted that the situation within Iran itself is also complex, as the sentiments and aspirations of all regional players are “intricately intertwined.”
“For Russia, Iran is a key regional partner with whom we share not only important transport, logistics, and technology projects but also the understanding that regional stability requires tireless defense against external attacks. Moreover, we must not forget the assistance Iran provided to Russia during the difficult initial stage of the special military operation.” “The situation regarding Iran requires very serious discussion and unconventional political and economic solutions. Otherwise, the landscape of the Middle East and adjacent regions will rapidly shift in a direction extremely unfavorable for both Russia and Iran,” said Fyodor Lukyanov.
