The State Duma Committee on International Affairs held a meeting with the delegation of the Supreme State Council of the State of Libya, headed by its Chairman Mohammed Takala. From the Russian side, State Duma deputies Leonid Slutsky, Vyacheslav Nikonov and Maria Butina took part.
Chairman of the State Duma Committee on International Affairs Leonid Slutsky spoke in favor of expanding Russian-Libyan parliamentary cooperation, proposing to hold a joint meeting with the Foreign Affairs Commission of the State Council of Libya in December. According to him, as part of the agenda, it would be important to discuss the situation on the African continent and the Middle East, issues of trade and economic cooperation, humanitarian, student and scientific exchanges, as well as the Libyan settlement. “Libya should not be a territory of external control as a result of external interference. Russia is ready to assist national reconciliation and unification of Libya, including through parliamentary diplomacy,” L. Slutsky emphasized.
For his part, the head of the delegation, Mohammed Takala, said that the Libyan side is extremely interested in developing cooperation with Russia through parliament. He invited State Duma deputies to visit Tripoli next year.
His position was complemented by First Deputy Chairman of the Supreme State Council Masoud Taher, who expressed support for the Russian foreign policy line to establish a multipolar world order. “Russia undoubtedly has every right to defend its national interests in Ukraine in the fight against US hegemony,” he said.
