“The meeting was as productive as it could be. This is really a historical moment. Discussed almost all topics, did not pass around the most pressing issues. Most importantly, we managed to bring together positions on Syria. Here are indicative statements by the US President that Russia and America can interact to address the humanitarian situation in the RAA. And this is already a very good basis for further cooperation.
It is very characteristic that Trump’s lips have also been told by the witch hunt about absolutely baseless accusations of Russia in collecting dirt on the US president and his family. And from this quite logically follows the peremptory and rigid refutation on the part of the head of the Russian state of allegations about interference in US elections.
Proceeding from the joint press conference, it can be concluded that the leaders of the United States and the Russian Federation on many issues on the international agenda decided to continue cooperation, including on key international dossiers. I want to believe that this is not just some temporary convergence of courses, but, indeed, the basis for renewal of contacts between the two largest world players, between the two members of the UN Security Council.
But while I would not fall into euphoria on the results of the first full-scale summit and make unnecessary bouncy conclusions. The coming weeks will show whether cooperation has resumed or not. Now, as well as after previous meetings, it is possible to raise hopes, expectations and aspirations to improve relations, but realities can be more prosaic. First and foremost, this is due to the internal political situation in the United States, including the upcoming midterm elections to the Congress.
Nevertheless, in many respects, the positions of Russia and the United States can be brought to a common denominator. We, of course, look forward to the resumption of full-format cooperation. This is a key task. And it is archival as for our countries, and for the formation of an architecture of world stability and security. How much it can be solved, how far it will be possible to move away from the rabid anti-Russian rhetoric in Washington and go partially to the constructive, is difficult to say for the time being. As far as the meeting in Helsinki can become a dominant and crucial factor in the development of further relations between our countries, it will be clear only in the near future. “
