Leonid Slutsky, Chairman of the Committee on International Affairs:
“With the leadership of the OSCE PA General Committee on Democracy, Human Rights and Humanitarian Affairs we discussed the situation in Ukraine and the conflict in the south-east of the country, that is still in a hot phase. For our part, we spoke in favor of direct visits by representatives of the OSCE PA to the territory from the DPR and the LPR. This visit, in my opinion, would be of great importance for real understanding of the whole gravity of the humanitarian situation in these republics, where the lives of ordinary people – women, old people and children – are threatened daily, as the shells of the armed forces of Ukraine signed “To children of Donbass” are still launched towards them.
In addition, we invited the leadership of the OSCE PA humanitarian committee to the Crimea, which has already been visited by dozens of international delegations. Today, representatives of the Assembly should only once visit the peninsula, talk to people to make sure that peaceful life is going on in the Crimea and Sevastopol, the population is not depressed at all, and the propaganda articles that inundate the Western European press simply do not correspond to reality.
At the same time, I suggested holding a joint meeting of the committees. Our Committee on International Affairs is ready for this format, together we could discuss many issues on the international agenda. The role of the Humanitarian Committee of the Assembly is very large and, above all, in establishing the truth and helping those who need it”.
