The State Duma Committee on International Affairs, headed by its Chairman Leonid Slutsky, met with Abbas Araghchi, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Iran, who was visiting Russia. The two sides discussed bilateral cooperation, taking into account geopolitical factors, the development of interparliamentary ties, and interaction on international platforms.
Leonid Slutsky noted that Russia and Iran are actively developing contacts in various areas, including the SCO, BRICS, and the Eurasian Economic Union. “In fact, over the past year, you have been involved in three leading integration blocs, of which Russia is one of the initiators and an active member,” Slutsky said.
Leonid Slutsky also advocated for expanding trade and economic cooperation between Moscow and Tehran, primarily by increasing mutual trade. “Today, trade turnover, in our view, is several times lower – approximately $5 billion in foreign currency.” “I believe that trade turnover should increase significantly in the coming years,” the committee head added.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, in turn, noted that relations between Russia and Iran are developing comprehensively.
“Relations between the Russian Federation and the Islamic Republic of Iran are developing comprehensively. We cooperate in virtually all areas,” Abbas Araghchi said.
The Iranian Foreign Minister also noted that interparliamentary ties between the two countries are also strengthening.
