On March 15, the Russian Foreign Ministry hosted a meeting between Sergey Lavrov and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates of the Syrian Arab Republic Faisal Mekdad, who was part of a governmental delegation accompanying President of Syria Bashar al-Assad during his official visit to Moscow.
Sergey Lavrov and Faisal Mekdad held a trust-based discussion on topical international and regional issues, both describing the current state of international relations as a global clash between forces advocating the sovereignty and equality of all states, and the geopolitical hegemony of the collective West, which is starting to lose its position in today’s world.
The foreign ministers discussed at length the developments in and around Syria, with an emphasis on the need to promote a comprehensive political settlement based on ensuring the unity, territorial integrity and sovereignty of the Syrian Arab Republic. They were satisfied to note positive changes in the situation recently, in particular, in the process of restoring Damascus’s multifaceted ties with the leading Arab capitals, which is gaining momentum.
When considering practical issues of building up Russian-Syrian mutually beneficial cooperation, Faisal Mekdad expressed gratitude for Russia’s effective assistance in relief efforts following the devastating earthquake in Syria.
